Kibyrrhaiotai

Kibyrrhaiotai
Naval theme (q.v.), first mentioned in the late seventh century. Its administrative center was Attaleia (q.v.). It evolved from the karabisianoi, the first permanent Byzantine fleet, but the name of the theme is derived from the small coastal town of Kibyrra, in Pamphylia (q.v.). The theme covered a large part of the southern coastline of Asia Minor (q.v.), including the regions of Caria, Lycia, Pamphylia, and portions of Isauria (qq.v.). Its chief function was to protect Asia Minor's southern flank against Arab naval attacks. It is last mentioned in 1043.
